We are continuing our summer sermon series, "Sacred Journeys: Lessons Learned Along the Road" with an issue raised by the film, The Bucket List.
The urgency behind a bucket list is the unfinished business of life: "What do you want to do/ see/ experience before you die?"
I had never heard of a "Bucket List" until I saw the movie. Now, it seems everyone has one. There is even a web page that is dedicated to sharing your bucket list and encouraging others to accomplish their goals.
Some of the most popular and highlighted items people posted on the Bucket List web site show a wide variety of goals
The Bucket List of Others
Some, sound exotic:
- Backpack Europe
- Canoe in Venice
- Ride a hot air baloon
Some require learning and challenge:
- Learn a foreign language
- Read the Bible
- Study Taoism
Some are noble:
- Volunteer at Hospice
- Pay for a child's cleft lip surgery
Some are a little dangerous:
- Go Sky Diving
- Strap a rocket to a Merry-Go-Round
- Swim with Sharks
Some frankly, seem to have a pretty low bar for goals:
- Dye my hair orange
- Eat a slice of Spam
- "Unplug" for 48 hours
- Spin around on an escalator (wouldn't it be more exciting to get on that Merry-Go-Round above?)
Your Bucket List
So what is on your bucket list? What is the unfinished business of your life? What is behind the items on your bucket list- what are you really looking for? If you were able to cross everything off your Bucket List, what would be different? How would you be different?
See you Sunday!
