This hasn’t been a good summer for “Religion”. Every time I turn on the news, there are stories of people being, killed, maimed and tortured in the name of God. I don’t know what bothers me most: the new images of suffering each day, or how numb I have become to them. It is all so horrible…and so predictable. People killing others and justifying the violence (or indifference to it) because of their religion.
That is why I was struck by one news story this week. It blew in like a fresh breeze. Religious leaders from Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths joined together on Monday in Denver to condemn the violence done in God’s name and call for a united effort to end it. They gathered for prayer and as witness of common unity against the murderous campaign of ISIS. They also gathered to launch what they called the PLACE (Peace, Love And Co-Existence) Initiative.
